Obituary for Mary Ann West (Cooper)

BRUCE----Mary Ann Cooper West, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 7, 2018 at Bruce Community Living Center. Born August 20, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Anna Cooper. On June 30, 1951, she married Dr. Felix Karr West (of Rossville, TN) in Clarksdale, MS, where the two lived for fifty-four years, until his death in 2005. She was a loving and creative homemaker in the truest sense of the word and was devoted to her many family members and friends. Mary Ann was active in the Clarksdale community in various organizations, such as the Mississippi Dental Auxiliary, the D.A.R., Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, (in which she was a popular den mother for many cub scouts and brownies). She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and coordinator for over twenty-five years. She was a member of the Altar/Flower Guild, Methodist Youth Fellowship volunteer, and she created the first Advent Christmas Tree, making many handmade ornaments, displayed during the Advent and Christmas seasons, her favorite time of year. While residing in Assisted Living at Flowers Glenn, she used her creative ability to make old-fashioned “yarn dolls” to share with children at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis and for many other young friends, as well as hand-knitted Christmas bell ornaments for family and friends. She loved entertaining, traveling, cooking, playing the piano, and was an avid sports fan, as she closely followed her Ole Miss Rebels, Dr. West’s favorite, the Tennessee Vols, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the New York Giants.
Pryor Funeral Home is honored to be serving the West family.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held for friends and family at Flowers Manor, 1251 Lee Drive, Clarksdale, MS at 3:00 pm, Friday September 14th, followed by a visitation and casual gathering of family and friends. A family graveside service will be at Magnolia Cemetery in Collierville, TN on Saturday, September 15, 2018.
She leaves behind her son, Karr West & daughter in law Lynette, of Clarksdale; daughter, Sarah West Walne (Jay) of Collierville, TN; and son Charles C. West (Lynn) of Shalimar, FL.
She has been preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Anna) Cooper, brothers Lt. Gen. Charles G. Cooper, USMC (Carol) of Falls Church, VA; and William A. Cooper of Clarksdale, her grandparents William Arthur Cooper (Isle of Guernsey, UK) & Wilhemina Baker (Greenville,MS) and John Ebenezer Gaston & Amanda Jane Cardwell (Derma, MS). Austin Walne (Andrea) of San Francisco, CA , Hunt Walne of Collierville, TN, and Megan, Virginia, and Gaston West of Shalimar, FL., and four great-grandchildren, Kate and Tripp Zemek, and Hayes and Andrew West.
Her family wishes with grateful hearts to thank the many wonderful caregivers and staff members at Flowers Manor and Flowers Glenn in Clarksdale, MS, those at the Bruce Community Living Center and Kindred Hospice in Bruce, MS, and all who have been so loving and have taken such good care of her through the years.
