Charlene Watkins Callaway passed away on Friday, Nov 30th at her daughter’s home in Northport, AL. She was 88 years old.

Charlene was born in Vardaman MS in 1930, to Charlie Watkins and Mallie Burt Watkins Coston. Charlene’s father passed away when she very young. When WWII began, Charlene’s mother met and married Charlene’s step-father Rufus Coston.

Charlene graduated from Bruce High School, Blue Mountain College (BEd), and from Miss. State (MEd). She worked as a secretary at West Point High School, and later moved to Jackson MS to work for the State Dept. of Education. While in Jackson, Charlene met and married Bob Callaway. Charlene and Bob moved to Starkville, MS in 1968. Charlene worked for 26 years for Miss. State, at the Research and Curriculum Unit, as a secretary/coordinator. After retiring from MSU, she worked part-time as a secretary at First Baptist Church, and at Simmons Littlejohn & Pilgrim. In later years, Charlene loved her role as a church volunteer and greeter. Many loved to get a Sunday morning hug from Ms. Charlene.
She loved God, spending time with friends and family, and was often the person that people turned to for counsel, support, and prayer. She was known for her beautiful smile, sweet spirit, and joyful demeanor. She will be deeply missed by so many whose lives she touched.

Survivors include Charlene’s son, Jeff Callaway of Starkville MS, daughter Amy and son-in-law Tim McCauley, of Northport, AL.

The graveside service will be Tues. Dec. 4, 1pm, at Bruce Cemetery, Bruce, MS.
The memorial service will be Thurs. Dec. 6, at First Baptist Church Sanctuary. Visitation with family will be from 10-11am, service at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Baptist Church, Starkville, MS
