Calhoun City---Ava Reeves, 105, of Medford, Oregon, slipped peacefully from her sleep into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, December 15, 2018. Born Ava Ellen Aston on April 12, 1913, in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, she was the sixth of 13 children born to Luther James Aston and Mattie Mae Hannaford Aston. Ava moved with her family to Calhoun County, MS when she was about 10 years old. She grew up on a farm in a rural community where church and school were their recreation and social events. Growing up, her parents took her to hear and participate in “old harp singing”, which she always enjoyed and loved to hear at Homecoming at Oak Springs. Six of her brothers served in the military at the same time during World War II. She married Walter Woodson Reeves, a farmer, in 1928, and together they had eight children, seven of whom were born on the farm. Walter moved to Ashland, Oregon in 1955 to work in the woods falling timber. Ava and the five youngest children joined him a few months later. Ava worked at a laundry in Medford and they were members of Calvary Baptist Church in Ashland. After Walter passed away in 1976, Ava moved back to Calhoun City in 1977 to be near her oldest daughter, Syble Morgan; her oldest son, Niles Reeves of Greenville, MS; and several of her siblings. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Calhoun City, where she sang with the JOYS (Just Older Youth). She made quilts for the first 80 years of her life and then she switched to making potholders. She accepted donations for the potholders and collected money all year long and then donated it to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for foreign missions. Ava also donated the potholders to missionaries and loved the fact that they were all over the world. Ava worked hard all of her life and could make a good delicious meal at the last minute out of a little of nothing. She loved to work in her flower garden, or plant in her vegetable garden. She had fresh tomatoes she grew still sitting on her kitchen counter when she died. Ava moved back to Oregon in 2012 to be near her youngest daughter, Dorothy Hicks and her middle son, James Reeves.
Ava was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter, sons Niles Reeves, Charles Reeves, James Reeves, daughters Syble Reeves Morgan, and Gladys Reeves Cameron Agnew, great-granddaughter Jennifer Cameron, and grandson Richard Reeves, brothers Earl Aston, Oscar Aston, Everett Aston, John Aston, Jesse Robert (J.R.) Aston, Edgar Aston, sisters Omie Aston Ward, Mable Aston Goodson, Mattie Aston Reeves, and Lois Aston Wright.
Ava is survived by her brother Dan Aston, Paris, TN; sons Jesse Reeves, Phoenix, AZ; Gary (Mary Beth) Reeves, Brandon, MS; daughter Dorothy Reeves Hicks, Medford, OR; grandchildren Blair (Jennifer) Morgan, Greenwell Springs, LA; Tammy Morgan (Dennis) McAnally, Denham Springs, LA; Terry (Patti) Cameron; Ronald Cameron, Washington; Jina Palamidessi, Woodland, CA; Diana Reeves (Joe) Pruitt; KS; Pearl Reeves (Rich) Gowen, Eugene, OR; Mike (Stephanie) Hicks Jr, Gold Hill, OR; Tina Hicks (Gary) Heskett, Medford, OR; Jason Reeves, AK; Jessica Reeves (Alan) Prunera, Hattiesburg, MS; Jared Reeves, Brandon, MS; 21 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren, and one on the way.
Pryor Funeral Home of Calhoun City is honored to be serving her family, with assistance from Conger-Morris Funeral Home in Medford, OR.
A funeral service celebrating her long and active life will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 11:00am at Calhoun City First Baptist Church. There will also be a visitation from 10:00am until service time at the church. Bro. Jim Vance will be officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Springs Cemetery in Derma, where Ava will be laid to rest beside her husband Walter.
Serving as pallbearers will be Blair Morgan, Spencer Morgan, Jared Reeves, Dennis McAnally, Mike Hicks Jr., and Gary Heskett.
Donations or memorials in her honor may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering through your local church.

What a precious lady she was. I was best friends with John and Martha Baker, her niece and husband. Both deceased. But we had so many wonderful times at Martha and Johns home with Ms Ava, Ms Lois and Dennis, Mattie and Jabo and his wife from Oregon when they would visit. We drank gallons of coffee and ate many good deserts together. Had tons of great laughs together. I loved them all like family. Oh and Jim and Sybil was with us many times also. Those are some treasured memories I’ll always have in my heart of Ms Ava and all of the other members of the family. I’m so sorry for the lose of such a fine Christian lady but what a life she lived and enjoyed. May God give peace and comfort to each one of the family and I know they are all rejoicing in Heaven together. Heaven definitely gained another beautiful Angel. Gods grace is sufficient in these times and you’re all in my heart and prayers. Love in Christ, Evelyn Hood Hawkins
