Robert Orien “Bobby” Phillips, 78, passed away peacefully at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo on Monday, March 4, 2019. Born August 17, 1940 in Grenada County, he was the son of the late Orien Edward Phillips and the late Jessie Boland Phillips. Bobby graduated from Calhoun City High School in 1958, and went on to Mississippi State University where he graduated with degrees in both education and music. Bobby also proudly served his country in the Army National Guard. During that time, our nation was facing great uncertainty by the actions of Fidel Castro and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Stationed at Fort Polk, LA during this period of heightened awareness, he was ready to go if called upon. To say Bobby was a member of Lewis Memorial Methodist Church would be an understatement. He dedicated his entire adult life to serving the church. He was a deacon, chairman of the board of trustees, and Sunday school teacher. He also sang in the choir, and played the organ or piano when needed, along with countless other duties. Bobby was a member of the Calhoun City Jaycees, and a Master Mason with the Calhoun City Lodge #506. He also served his community by being a volunteer fireman for Calhoun City Fire Department for many years. In his free time he enjoyed working in the yard, either landscaping or growing tomatoes in his garden. Bobby was loved and highly respected by his community. He made the world a better place through simple, principled living, both personally and professionally. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Pryor Funeral Home is honored to be serving Bobby’s family.
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held Friday, March 8, 2019, at 2:00pm at Pryor Funeral Home. There will also be a visitation on Friday from 1:00pm until service time at the funeral home. Bro. Will Dowling will be officiating. Interment will follow at Calhoun City Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Ira Davis, Seth Davis, Chris Phillips, Taylor Phillips, Garrett Arnold, and Charles Diamond. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deacons of Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, past and present.
He leaves behind his brother, Billy (Alberta) Phillips of Alabaster, AL; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

I am so sorry to hear of the death of my longtime friend Bob Phillips. I first met him at MSU when we participated in a musical "HMS Pinafore", and from that point, our circle of musical friends who performed together during college continued to keep in touch over the years to the present day. It is hard to believe that so many years have flown by, but all of the good memories we shared are still ever present and very dear. I send love, blessings, and my deepest sympathy along with prayers for comfort for all of Bob's family and friends. With great affection, Harriette Price Mastin

We have certainly had some great times in the music department at Mississippi State. I am glad we continued to have our luncheons for our small group. We will try to continue this tradition and remember you and James Hilton when we gather. I know you are in a better place and are not suffering. You leave behind so many friends and and good memories. You were loved by everyone you met.
