Obituary

Mary Hortense Hood Bryant, 92, passed away peacefully at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Calhoun City on Monday, March 11, 2019. Born May 7, 1926 in Big Creek, she was the daughter of the late Robert Cecil Burke and the late Mary Jones Burke. She was a retired school teacher and a member of Old Town Baptist Church. She graduated from Big Creek High School and then went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Mississippi while working at Kellwood Co. in Calhoun City. In 1977, she became the 3rd grade teacher at Calhoun Academy, and retired from there after nearly 20 years. She touched the lives of so many during her lifetime, and she is still cherished and loved by the many students she taught along the way. In her free time she enjoyed working in her flower garden or painting. She loved decorating rocks with her beautiful artwork. She also read the Bible faithfully and loved attending church service. Her faith, family, and friends meant the most to her, and she will be remembered always for her caring heart and sweet soul.

Pryor Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family.

A funeral service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, March 16, 2019, at 2:00pm at Pryor Funeral Home. There will also be a visitation on Saturday from 12:00pm until service time at the funeral home. Bro. Ron Madison, Bro. Fred Hartley, and Bro. Charlie Fitz will be officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Frank Burke, Guy Burke Hendrix, Eddie Hood, David Magness, Jr., Benji Vance, and Tanner Vance. Honorary Pallbearers will be John Clayton, Steve Bryant, and Robert Kahler.

She leaves behind her husband, Hollis Vaughn Bryant; three sons, Robert Oliver Hood of Calhoun City, William Lee (Rebecca) Hood of Oxford, and John Burke Hood of Calhoun City; daughter, Betsy Diane (Robert) Kahler of Saratoga, NY; brother, Howard Wayne (Betty June) Burke of Jacksonville, FL; 5 grandchildren, Fantasy (Benji) Vance of Grenada, Blake Hood of Oxford, Bailey (John) Clayton of Dallas, TX, Bryce and Claire Kahler of Saratoga, NY, and 5 great-grandchildren, Tanner, Grace, Faith, Sibley, and Linus.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Rev. Oliver Bryant Hood, two brothers, Robert Burke and Travis Burke; and a sister, Maggie Burke.

So sorry to read about the loss of your mom. She was such a sweet lady. I know she is happy to be in heaven with her loved ones . I have wonderful memories of being with this family as a child. Betsy was a very good friend to me. We had lots of wonderful Sunday afternoons visiting with each other. Love to the family.
