Joel Edward “Joe” Gregg, 93, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 8, 2020. Born March 12, 1927, in Derma, he was the son of the late Joel Lee Gregg and the late Mary Ida Edwards Gregg. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, and proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was retired after farming and logging most of his life, and also owned and operated Joe’s Café in Slate Springs years ago. He loved to garden, and was well known for his “famous” tomatoes. His incredible smile will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but his memory will be cherished forever in the hearts of all who knew him.
Pryor Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Gregg family.
A Graveside Service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, March 14, 2020, at 11:00am at Old Bethany Cemetery in Webster County. There will also be a visitation on Friday, March 13, 2020, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Pryor Funeral Home. Bro. Jim Vance and Bro. Matthew White will be officiating.
Pallbearers will be his Grandsons and Great-Grandsons.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Earl Harris, Danny Crutchfield, and Tom Wooten.
He leaves behind his wife, Judy Barker Gregg; daughters, Judy (Jimmy) Carver of Forrest, MS, Suzye (Charles) Lovorn of Slate Springs, Janet Gregg Fortenberry of Slate Springs, and June Johns of Charleston, SC; son-in-law, John Hyde of Big Creek; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bernard Gregg, Russell Gregg, and James Gregg; and daughter, JoAnne Hyde.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Old Bethany Cemetery Fund, c/o Suzye Lovorn, 164 Dentontown Road, Calhoun City, MS, 38916.
