James Clovis Pittman, 87, passed away at Olive Grove Terrace in Olive Branch on Thursday, May 14, 2020. Born October 14, 1932, in Cadaretta, MS, he was the son of the late J.H. Pittman and the late Catherine Woods Pittman. He was a member of Broadway Baptist Church in Southaven, MS. He proudly served in the United States Army Feb 1953-1955. He retired in1991 after working 31 years for CASE/International Harvester.
After retirement James became a Gideon and found that distributing bibles was a blessing to others and a way to honor our Lord. James loved to grow things from cotton to soybeans on the farm, to a variety of vegetables in his huge garden at home. His favorite time of year was in the fall because he loved football season. He was an avid fan of the Ole Miss Rebels, and attending Ole Miss football games, or watching them on TV was his favorite pastime.
James and his wife Mary met at Mississippi College after his return from service in the Army during the Korean War. They were married on June 2, 1956, and have spent almost 64 wonderful years together. Above all, he loved his family and cherished the years with Mary and watching his family grow. They will miss him dearly, but they know he is now rejoicing in his Heavenly home.
Pryor Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Pittman family.
A Graveside Service celebrating his life will be held Thursday, May 21, 2020, at 3:00 pm at the Pittman Cemetery, Cadaretta, MS in Webster County. Rev. Albert Lee Pittman will be officiating.
Pallbearers will be Mike Philley, Jimmy Philley, Phillip Woods, James Shelby Sparks, Alfred Pittman, and Craig Pittman.
He leaves behind his wife of nearly 64 years, Mary B. Pittman; son, James Burt Pittman of Southaven, MS; daughters, Cathy Stevens of Memphis, TN and Jill (George) Hammond of Olive Branch, MS; grandchildren, Sarah (J.T.) Turner, Wes (Angelica) Pittman, Cole (April) Pittman, Grady Pittman Casey (Mike), Laura (Dave) Mann, Drew (Katie) Williamson, Benjamin Williamson, Amber Hammond, and Amy (Mikel) Connell; great-grandchildren, Ella, Olivia, Sutton, Campbell, Sawyer, Lori Lei, Quinn, Eadie Kate, Levi, June, Lydia, Garrett, Hadley, and Bradley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.H. and Catherine Pittman; and four sisters, Martha Sue Philley, Merriam Pittman, Dorothy Sparks, and Myra Ann Cox.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International at, or mailed to Gideons International, PO Box 704, Southaven, MS 38671 or mailed to the Pittman Family Cemetery, c/o Jimmy Pittman 2130 Holliday Road, Raymond, MS 39154.
Expressions of sympathy may be left for the family at

Pryor Funeral Home takes the health of our staff, our families, our visitors, and our community very seriously, and we are adhering to guidelines set forth by President Trump and Gov. Tate Reeves. At this time, we are asking everyone to support the limited gathering and visitation policy set by our government officials. We will be allowing small family groups and limiting the number of people in family rooms to 10 at one time at visitations, as well as funerals. For graveside services, we will be asking everyone to also comply with the required social distancing space of six feet. We’re also advising against hand-shaking, hugging, kissing and other intimate contact.
