Joyce Logan Shannon, 82, passed away on March 16, 2021. She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Charles W. Shannon (who passed away on September 14, 2011), mother to James W. Shannon (Alice) of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and Charlsia Lyn Fortner (James) of Arlington, Virginia. She was Grandmom to Jay (Jessica), Logan (Kellie), and Ben Shannon and Audrey and Charles Fortner. She was also Aunt Jo to nephew Joey Gatewood (Linda) of Forest, Mississippi.
She was born on December 1, 1938, to the late Dovie May Ferguson and the late James Elvis Logan in the Reid Community of Calhoun County. She graduated from Vardaman High School in 1956 where she played on the high school basketball team, receiving several honors. She married Charles on July 18, 1956.
She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Calhoun City, serving on the Counting Committee and the Hospitality Committee. She was a member of the Senior Adult Choir, serving three years as President, a member of the Joy Group, serving three years as Secretary/Treasurer, and served in other areas as needed. Prior to moving to Calhoun City with Charles in 1996, she worked as Secretary/Bookkeeper for the Community Development Foundation in Tupelo, Mississippi for eight years. While there, she served as Treasurer of the Pilot Club. During the late 60's, she and Charles moved to Starkville where they lived for 30 years. They were both employed by Mississippi State University. She served as Executive Secretary to the Head of Agricultural and Biological Engineering during that time. While working at Mississippi State University, she was very active in professional clubs, serving as Secretary/Treasurer of the Professional Secretaries Club.
She loved her family dearly, and was very proud of them for their accomplishments. The grandkids were an important part of her life. She enjoyed being with them while they grew up and following their lives into adulthood. She really enjoyed following the younger twins in their school work, arts, hockey and ice skating.
She and Charles built a home on Shannon Hill, where she resided until her death. Preceding her in death was her husband of over 55 years, Dr. Charles William Shannon; her parents, Dovie May Ferguson Logan and James Elvis Logan; sister, Wynette Gatewood; brother Elvis Lynn Logan (Sue); and grandparents, Howard and Ethel Ferguson, and James Henry and Maggie Logan.
